Builders have been reporting a real increase in sales of new houses in rural areas of Sydney. Department of Planning figures show a doubling of building on the city's fringe rising from 10 per cent of all works to 20 per cent of all construction in the last financial year, compared to 2005-2006.
Cornish Group are a developer firm and say turnover has increased ten-fold on last year.
Sydney's has a brand new suburb, the Ponds, near Kellyville, and interest has been strong.
The state land developer Landcom says numbers have doubled from last year. Other developers says buyers had returned in the city as well as the rural areas.
Second or third home owners are also moving, with many choosing to sell their smaller city residences and more to a larger house further out.
There are many incentives from the government to buying a new home, firstly the first home owners grant which was increased to a whopping $21,000 for anyone choosing to build or buy a brand new home. There are also other rebates and financial incentives for non-first time owners such as stamp duty cuts and developers cutting prices of land.
