Banks have been asked to be "compassionate" to borrowers who are struggling with mortgage repayments. Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard spoke to ABC Television following a meeting with welfare groups to discuss the impacts of the financial crisis and job losses.
Ms Gillard said that instead of throwing Australian families out on the street, banks should ne nice to families who are falling behind on repayments.
"Australians don't want to see a neighbour, a colleague, a friend thrown out of their home," Ms Gillard told ABC Television.
"There was a call to the banks to see if there can be a dialogue with welfare groups and government about taking a sympathetic view if a family does fall behind with its mortgage repayments"
Welfare groups have asked banks to provide financial counselling to relieve the burden because they themselves are being overwhelmed by people wanting help.
It is expected that the government with introduce tax cuts to boost the flagging economy.
