Low-cost renovations for your home

by Rachel Seymour 12/04/2008

Renovations don't have to break the bankRising interest rates and a drop in disposable income doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up on your renovation dream. DIY knowledge and creativity go a long way towards giving your home a facelift while cutting costs.

According to building company Thallon Mole Group director Andy Thallon, finding second-hand building materials is a great place to start.

"You can save yourself 30 per cent on your renovation if you go and source the materials yourself," Mr Thallon said.

Before embarking on a search for second-hand building materials, Mr Thallon recommended making a plan of action for what was needed.

"You have to purchase materials that are in keeping with the style and era of your home," he said.

Materials such as weatherboard, timber, tin and corrugated iron are easy to come by second-hand, as are bricks for paving, windows and doors, and even antique dressers which can be converted into bathroom vanity units.
