Fancy a free pool or maybe air-conditioning installed at no cost? Perhaps a free dishwasher? That's just what some builders are offering in order to entice you to buy a new home.
It seems competitive times call for drastic measures and with the building industry suffering slumps from various directions, building companies are getting creative in order to generate interest.
According to AV Jennings state manager Tony Coward, consumers are wary of buying new property during tough economic times, but could be lured by impressive freebies.
"Traffic through the display homes is significantly up and there's a lot of people looking, but they're just afraid to commit.
"We'll do whatever we've got to do to get people through the door and then use our sales techniques to try to get them to buy a home," he said.
Mr Coward says they are also offering free remote control security systems in some homes.
Other builders are offering upgrades of top-quality benchtops, cooktops and dishwashers. Builders are looking to provide cheap, single-storey homes designed with the first home buyer in mind. As the first home owners grant has been increased until mid year, building companies are keen to get this group of home buyers to use the grant.
Last week saw the news that Australian building approvals fell 12.8 per cent in November, their lowest level since March 2001, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
