Increase in WA first home buyers
Western Australia is seeing a surge in first home buyers with the average loan at $282,600.
According to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2377 finance contracts for first homes were drawn up in WA in May, 368 more than in April and the highest number since 1991 when records began.
Housing Industry Association senior economist Ben Phillips said the industry group forecast a 15 per cent increase in housing starts by December, with the lift in lending in May providing a "green shoot" to home building in Australia.
The total number of new mortgages approved in WA in the month of May was 7333, the highest number in 15 months.
With interest rates low at present, many chose to fix their rate, securing a low rate now in case of any rate rises in the future.
Construction of new homes is improving too with about 1330 loans were to either build or buy new homes, a total not seen since mid-2007.
